Quick and easy to install and functions as expected. I’ve been taking the battery cable off my ’72 Nova for years in order to preserve the battery. There’s a slow drain in the cabin light and I don’t want to take the custom headliner out to fix it. The cables and connector take quite a beating removing and replacing all the time and this absolutely solves that portion of the problem. It’s also a good theft-deterrent!

I got this battery switch to repair my wife’s Ford Expedition that had part of the positive battery wiring corrode away. It works great to replace the metal link I used as a temporary repair, you simply unscrew the RED knob (description said it was green…accuracy counts) and the knob and bolt disconnect the battery power. I might add a simple lock washer to the bolt to help maintain a more positive connection. Maybe a knurled face where the bolt meets the connector would hold a better connection without needing to add something like a lock washer. I also noticed that the bolt face to connector connection was at a slight angle, not flush and flat when tightened, the added lock washer will cure this. I’m not sure what kind of plastic the knob is made of, we’ll see if it holds up to engine heat.

The shut off switch works perfectly. I have used shut off switches in marine environments as you store a boat for extended times. I have a 1946 Mercury that was chopped and channeled and turned into a show vehicle used in rallies, car shows and parades. As with a lot of older vehicles, this one experienced a phantom battery drain if allowed to sit without starting for a significant length of time. Initially, I started by simply removing the positive cable on the battery – located behind the back seat (the trunk was removed and the rear of the car shortened and smoothed). Accessibility was an issue along with poor lighting.
This unit was easy to intall on the positive post and the original battery cable connects to the end of the unit (slightly smaller than the original battery post). Once hooked up you simply turn (unscrew) the knob and the power is disconnected form the battery. It is easy to reach and disconnect the battery without the need for a wrench. I no longer have a concern over a discharged battery that will not turn over the starter.
This is a very simple product that works exactly as intended.

This RECOIL brand battery cut-off switch follows an old traditional design, and it looks to be made of quality components, but mine came with a manufacturing flaw that made it less effective.
Luckily, the flaw was easily corrected, but I should not have to “fix” a tool that I just received. I will describe the flaw farther down, but for now, let me mention the positive features of this tool.
It looks to be made of quality components with the turn screw and both parts of the main body made of brass (alloy) separated from each other by a thick white plastic insulator. The pinch bolt is described as stainless-steel, although it is magnetic and is plated with yellow zinc chromate to increase its corrosion resistance.
This is cut-off switch looks functionally identical to the “special” tool required in the GM service manual when conducting parasitic draw tests with a Fluke® meter to prevent damage to the meter’s fuses.
Typically, it is also used as a disconnect switch to prevent battery drain or potential electrical hazards when a vehicle is in storage or being serviced. For all of these tasks, it would be effective and functional, but as I said, mine came with a small flaw.
The two main parts of the tool were not parallel on the unit I received, which resulted in the red capped brass screw not touching the top of the tool evenly and completely when it was screwed down. This significantly reduced the contact area, as it only touched on one side, leaving a gap on the other side. The reduced contact area meant that it had difficulty carrying the specified maximum of 500 Amps while starting the vehicle.
Luckily, this flaw was easily correctable by carefully clamping the tool into a bench vise and giving it a gentle squeeze to align the bottom half with the top and make them parallel as I’m sure that this is what the designer intended. It just looks as if the two halves were not carefully assembled, and not as if any parts are made incorrectly. Once I fixed it, everything aligned and worked as designed.

I’m pleased with this battery disconnect/shut off switch by Recoil.
Super easy to install. Just put the open end over the battery terminal and the battery cable to the other end.
Twisting the red knob down for “live”, or up to disconnect.
I am using this on a mini excavator that seems to like to drian the battery out when not in use. This has completely fixed that problem – and with very little effort.
Should work on pretty much any standard post battery type terminal. I will say that the opening seemed to naturally fit on the Negative side. But the knob is Red, which universally mean the Positive… So it’s a little confusing on why it’s colored that way? I removed on star for that. Even in the listing it shows connected to the negative terminal so I am pretty sure that’s the one that makes the most sense…
Otherwise, simple and effective. Easy to install, easy to operate. Very reasonable cost and adds a layer of protection. Well worth it.
