This was an easier then expected install. Everything fit well and worked as it should. The great thing it fixed that I was not expecting was the keyless entry. Now I’m not sure this will help everyone or if it was just by chance. But my keyless entry for my truck had become weak. I changed the battery in the key fob multiple times and had to be standing just about at the door to have the truck lock or unlock. After changing out the driverside door lock latch the key fob works like it did from the day I bought the truck. So I’m not sure exactly how or why this changed but it’s been great.

I bought this passenger door actuator for my 2001 Toytoa Tacoma Crew Cab. It’s identical to the one that failed a year ago. Easy to install? Yes and no. The passenger door on my Tacoma was closed and locked. You’re in for a lot of work to get the door open and panel off just to get to replacing the actuator. There is a trick, but it works. (Yes, I tried a slim jim, but after an hour I gave up.) First I had to take the driver’s seat out, then the console, and then the passenger seat. Once the seats are out I used a panel remover tool to pop open the bottom back corner of the panel. You can’t get the whole panel off because the dash is in the way. With the bottom back corner of the panel freed I had to reach my arm in and around with a screw driver to lift up on part of the mechanism to get the door latch to open. Once the door is open, replacing the actuator was fairly easy. Just a few bolts and plug in the electrical wire. The tricky part was the orange plastic retainer for the rod. A bit difficult to see in there when your hand’s in there trying to line up and snap that retaining clip. After the actuator was installed, I tested with the door still open to make sure the actuator worked. It did. Then I did the door closed test. It worked. Estatically happy my door works again. Then, it was putting everything back together again. It’s some work, but you can do it. Very happy I bought this. Price is about right for an after market actuator and cheaper than buying from a dealer, and much cheaper if you do it yourself.

When the door lock on my Tacoma started to fail, I look into alternatives. There weren’t many. A new lock mechanism from the dealership or replace the lock motor. I choose the later. Bought the motor here on Amazon. But if I would have had one of these available, I would have gone this route. This looks well made and almost identical to the factory lock. Harness connector and bolt holes matched perfectly. Kind of a pain to install but with some work it can be done and far cheaper than the dealership. I hope it will last as long as the factory lock mechanism.
