Bag filter unlike the stock metal and the gas gauge worked for 4 months pump still runs but float obviously melted in the tank

This truck is a seldom used truck at my house. I loan it out when a family member needs it, I haul trash, etc. So, imagine my feeling when after 4 years of not having a gas gauge, that the fuel pump went out, I was actually smiling…. that was until I ordered this pump. As stated, I have driven for 4 years without a gas gauge only because changing the pump is a PITA in this vehicle.
Dislike – You get the pump assembly and 1 gasket.
I had to cut out the gasket and remove the small vent line adapter on my old pump. I also had to use my old main gasket as the new one was too tall to allow proper proper mating of the pump adapter (the giant plastic nut to the tank). I first tested the new pump with it resting on the tank and my gas gauge worked again. I get the pump installed and everything hooked back up. I fire up the truck and the gauge will not go above the low gas light mark(1/16th??). WTF ??
I thought that I had maybe spun the pump assembly so that the float is hitting the side of the tank, so I once again drop the tank, loosen the nut, turn the pump slightly, put everything back in place. Before turning the key, I notice that the fuel tank is reading about 1/8 tank(about the proper amount of fuel). I turn the key and the gauge falls to where the low gas light stays on again. I turn the key off, and it rises back to the fuel level.
For $hits & Giggles I went and filled the tank thinking that might fix the float issue. Same issue… key off… full tank, key on… low gas light.
So instead of dropping the full tank this time, I went and cut a opening in my truck bed to access the pump from the top (it’s a beater and a full size tool box sits over the cut, so who cares) I disconnected the gas line, hooked up a fuel hose, turned on the key and drained 15 gallons from the tank. I tested the gauge and I still have the same issue with the gas gauge, key off… fuel level, key on… low gas light.
I got on my favorite Dakota forum and asked about the fuel pump issue. The main one that stood out was a broken ground wire. Guess what?? That wasn’t it. So before I made this post, I requested a replacement pump. We shall see if the new one resolves the issue.
They want me to send back the old pump, let’s see what UPS says about this gas soaked part being shipped.

Pump looks right, but has a different style connector from OEM. No connector, no instructions, no available pigtail or adapter harness available anywhere. Difficult to contact the seller!

No stars if possible!! Tried to install and rubber flange was to thick for it to thread on. Had to use my old one. Seen no filter system unless it’s in the pump? Still had no start issue and could hear pump running. Worked on it on and off for a month throwing parts at it! Still ended with a no start! Finally broke down and sent it to the shop and low and behold the new fuel pump was only putting out 37psi!!!! Well here we are past return date and this was my problem the whole time!!! These are junk

Very poor fuel pump. Doesn’t have the rubber gasket seal to prevent an evaporative fuel leak. I failed smog because I had an evap leak that I didn’t previously have (done with a prior test on the original pump). I only changed pumps because my sender on the original unit was not showing me fuel levels on the gas gauge. That part worked on this unit, except my gas mileage dropped in half since gas was escaping as fumes through the non-sealed fuel pump. The warmer the temperature, the more gas evaporates right out of your tank. I normally get 230-240 miles on a fuel tank of gas in my old v8 truck. With this fuel pump, I got about 100 miles out of 20 gallons. Insane!
I contacted the company as to how to resolve this and my email was ignored, so this was returned. Not the easiest thing to return when it’s been soaked in gasoline. What a waste of money! It costs labor for mechanic to drop the tank to put this in. So I had to pay twice for this to be done. The second time around, I bought an OEM Delphi unit which had the rubber gasket. Got the evap test done again and I passed. No problem. My recommendation, with the labor costing so much to change this, don’t cheap out and get a poorly made product. Bite the bullet and buy a brand name pump/sender so you only have to do this once. I do buy cheaper parts that usually work for my old truck, but I never thought about having to change this out twice. So beware. If you got something on your vehicle that costs a lot to change out, you probably want to do the job only once. So buy something better. I learned that the hard way. Lost labor costs and lost gas to evaporation. Plus the frustration of going through this ordeal.
