We got this to replace the break-away cable that came with our new camper. The cable that comes with the camper was at least 6 feet long and had to be tucked between the jack stand and the propane tank. I was always worried that it would drop down and catch on something pulling the break pin.
The coiled cable is perfect. It doesn’t drag the ground and is covered with a rubber coating. The d-clip that comes with it is a little small; I had up get a larger clip to be able to easily clip it to my trucks chain rings. The clip that comes with it will work; I just like it a little easier 🙂
The switch itself was easy to install. At first, I was going to just replace the old cable and pin with the new one but realized that the pin on the new one was a little shorter. I ended up just replacing the entire switch which only took a few mins to do.

Let me just say, do NOT trust the big camping store that has all the commercials on TV. From the time be bough our RV we had nothing but problems. When we purchased our RV they installed a hitch that did not work for us and the emergency brake cable was attached to it. If our trailer broke away it wouldn’t have done a thing. I had to find a resolution so I ordered this cable. This cable is great! I’m able to connect it to my truck with plenty of slack so it’s not pulling too hard on the emergency brake system. I am able to make nearly 90 degree turns and don’t have to worry about this pulling out. It has a coating on it so I don’t have to worry about rust as easily as the one provided from “Camping Land”. This works well for us and I would order it again if I needed it.

Great break-away trailer brake set.
I got a similar one of these a few years back, I like the self-coiling plastic coated cable. That carabiner and cable were smaller and have been difficult to hook into my truck hitch.
This set is heavy duty with a large carabiner which hooks in much easier.
The breakaway switch is standard, easy to swap out just the disconnect pin if you don’t need to replace the entire switch.
Highly recommended, well worth the investment!

I ordered this item to replace the original safety switch on my cargo trailer, that had failed. Soldering and heat shrink sealing the two wire connections was the most time consuming part of the installation.
FYI. Pulling a trailer on public roadways without a functional breakaway switch (when required), is irresponsible, and illegal. AND your auto insurance company may not pay any resulting damages, or injuries should the trailer become uncoupled from the tow vehicle.

OK replacement for an emergency brake away switch and cable. The cable itself is very nice, but the fitting are just OK. They work, but could be better
The large clasp that attaches to the hitch/tow vehicle is magnetic- so not sure if it’s going to rust. The end that attaches to the “key” of the brake switch attached to the towed vehicle is a key ring type which has to be permanently attached to the key. It is magnetic, but the cable isn’t.
I checked my older BlueOx cable and it has a brass clasp that attaches to the hitch and a non magnetic clip that attaches to the brake key on the towed vehicle. The cable of the BlueOx is magnetic.
I guess the main difference is if you leave the “key” in the brake switch or remove it. I have always left the key in and check it periodically. I do have a spare key just in case someone steals it.
The other difference is that this reviewed cable is a springy cable with 2 swaged loops. The end attachments are added, and removable via a ring. The key is held by a ring which is not a quick method of attaching something- a clasp would be nicer. The instructions suggest leaving the key in the switch, but the key is not easily removed from the cable. The key is also different from a Blue Ox, and I don’t know if a replacement can be sourced. I saw online that Blue Ox is not selling replacement switch keys, so it seems they want you to buy the whole package ($$). With the BlueOx the attachments are swaged to the cable and not removable. With one you can easily replace a defective clasp, on the other it’s impossible to loose a clasps.
It also takes a lot of force to pull out the key from the switch- I lubricated the switch which decreased the required force, but I would be certain that in case of a tow bar failure the pull would be straight as I’m concerned the force could rip the switch off the towed vehicle.
My opinion is that if the clasps wear out or break- it’s time to replace everything. I also like to have critical spares. This is perfect for a spare, but I would also get a spare brake switch key to go with it, If that’s even possible.

I had to replace my original breakaway switch because the cable and switch rusted and stopped working. I found this replacement one and I really like it. The switch looks about the same as my other one, but the cable and the calabrina are much nicer. The cable is a coiled 4 ft long SS cable coated with plastic with a high quality calabrina. It was very easy to change out and only took like 15 minutes.

This trailer breakaway kit comes with everything you need except a battery. If you have a battery installed already, this kit is ready to go. It’s well made and simple enough to install. The breakaway function seems to work great, won’t be testing on the road though.

This thing is heavy duty and way better than the original cables. The spring design prevents it from dragging if you forget to unhook it as well. Highly recommend this lanyard.
